The Superfoods that Everyone Should be Eating

We are all told that we should be eating more superfoods, but what exactly are they?

Although the term is a slightly contested subject, superfoods are known for boosting your health and reduce our risk of developing some chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, strokes and even cancer. On top of this, they are also said to slow down the ageing process, boost both our moods and physical ability, and even our intelligence.

Foods that have gained a superfood status tend to be those that are packed full of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Antioxidants protect the body against the harmful effects of free radicals, which are naturally produced in every living cell, and known to cause cell damage. It should be noted though that some research does not back up these claims.

That said, all of the superfoods that we have listed are healthy none the less, and even if they do not have all of the health benefits that perhaps they claim, they still aid both a healthy and varied diet, which in itself is what we should all be following.

Here are just ten superfoods that we believe everyone should be eating.

Garlic:

Garlic has a lot of superpowers and is often used in natural medicine, as it can protect you from a lot of illnesses, as well as helping to boost your immune system. Although it might not leave you smelling fresh, it can be used in so many different recipes and is very easy to incorporate into your everyday diet.

It is full of antioxidants and is one of the best ingredients that you can have in your kitchen. It can be eaten raw and cooked and can be added to most dishes, salad dressings, salsa, and even butter.

Blueberries:

Blueberries are packed full of antioxidants and should be a part of everyone’s diet. By throwing just a handful of blueberries into any given smoothie, you instantly make it a superfood one, which is becoming very popular in recent years.

They are packed full of nutritional goodness, as well as tasting great. What’s more is that they are a brilliant weight loss aid, making them the perfect healthy snack for anyone who is trying to shift a few pounds.

Broccoli:

Broccoli is an absolute favourite in the kitchen and is classed as being one of the original superfoods. It is safe to say that it is easy to see why; it tastes great, is a versatile vegetable which can be used in a vast array of dishes, not to mention it is packed full of vitamins and antioxidants, which have significant benefits to our health.

Oats:

You might think that superfoods are solely about fruit and vegetables, but actually, this is a pervasive myth. It would seem that one of the nations favourite breakfast ingredient has also been marked as a superfood as well.

Oats are so easy to prepare, not to mention being so versatile as well, but they are packed full of goodness that gives you so many nutritional benefits, for, let’s face it, minimal effort. You can also get creative when you prepare it as well, giving you a different breakfast that is just as healthy every day.

Eggs:

Eggs are an excellent source of protein, making them a great superfood item.

There are so many ways that you can cook eggs as well, and they can be eaten for most meals, so you really can get creative.

Spinach:

If you have ever watched Popeye, you will easily be able to see why spinach has been crowned as a superfood. It is packed full of iron, and other nutrients, which do not become diminished like a lot of foods once they have been cooked.

Whether you choose to add it to a curry dish or sprinkle your salad with its leaves, it is a great vegetable to incorporate into your diet. Again, when eaten raw, it is a perfect addition for anyone who is trying to lose weight.

Cocoa Nibs:

That’s it, we are saying that chocolate is a superfood. Be careful though, and make sure that you are buying the best quality, as some are packed full of sugar and other nasties. They cater for all tastes as well, as they range from very bitter to very sweet!

You can add them to smoothies, cakes, or even jazz up some savoury dishes.

Salmon:

Salmon is an oily fish that is packed full of omega-3 and is one that should be eaten regularly. The health benefits of eating Salmon are precisely what makes this one of the tastiest superfoods.

Almonds:

Almonds are a great source of fibre and can be added to a vast number of dishes. They are commonly found in a lot of Thai dishes, but can be eaten raw, or cooked, and can add some crunch to your salad, or fibre to your casserole.

Kale:

Although this was one of the newest superfoods, it is easy to see why it has been so readily accepted. It is packed full of nutrients and antioxidants, and really should be in everyone’s shopping list.

Again, it is a very bright and versatile vegetable that can be added to a vast number of dishes, or salads.
