How To Treat Whooping Cough Naturally

Whooping cough might sound like an outdated illness, however it is still a problem for many, thankfully, whooping cough can be treated naturally.

Whooping cough is an incredibly contagious bacterial infection of the lungs and airways that can cause repeated coughing bouts, lasting for two to three months or more. It is a nasty infection, and can make babies and young children particularly, very unwell. It can be spread easily through the droplets of the coughs or sneezes of someone who is infected, so it is very important that good hygiene is practised throughout.

The symptoms at first begin as being similar to those of a cold, and include a runny nose, red and watery eyes, a sore throat, and a raised temperature. It is then normal for an intense coughing bout to begin a week after. These bouts can last for a few minutes at a time, being more common at night, and it is not unusual to bring up thick mucus that is then followed by vomiting.

If you or your child is showing symptoms of whooping cough, it is important to get them checked by their doctor. Antibiotics are normally used in order to reduce the time that someone is infectious; however, there are also a number of different natural treatments that you can try alongside these, to help with the cough and fever.

Here are just some things that can help.

Ginger:

Ginger is really popular in natural remedies, and it is easy to see why. It has great immune system properties, and works by warming up the body, so it can then break down the amount of toxins that are in the organs.

On top of this, it has antibacterial properties, which will help to clean the lymphatic system, which will help to prevent the amount of toxins that then make us more susceptible to infections such as this, particularly those that are in the respiratory system.

Turmeric:

This is one of the most powerful herbs out there, and is again used to treat a number of different diseases. It can help by reducing the inflammation and helping to ease the pain, allowing your child to start to feel better quicker.

One benefit of turmeric is that there are relatively few side effects, unless it is taken in extremely large amounts. The key ingredient in turmeric, curcumin is well known for its strong antibacterial potential, and can protect you against a wide range of health problems.

Make some bone broth:

The age old saying of having chicken soup when you are unwell might be somewhat of a cliché, but there is actually some truth behind why this is offered.

Soups or smoothies that contain a bone broth are really great at helping to reduce the inflammation in the respiratory system, as well as boost the immune system, and to get the nutrients that you require in order to fight the whooping cough infection.

Experts say that bone broth is actually one of the most beneficial foods that you can have when you are ill, and contain all of the nutrients that you need to boost your health.

Liquorice root:

This herb is fantastic at helping to stop coughs, whilst enhancing the immune system at the same time.  This is because it has great soothing anti-inflammatory properties that can help to naturally relieve a sore throat.

It should be noted though that liquorice root is only recommended for short term use, and should not be used in people who have high blood pressure.

Oregano oil:

Oregano oil is well known to support your respiratory health, which makes it a great natural remedy for helping whooping cough.

Not only are they really beneficial to your health, they have very few side effects, and are low cost compared with conventional medicine.

It is important to take it safely though. Older children and adults can take oregano oil internally for a maximum of two weeks. Simply dilute one to two drops of oregano oil with water or coconut oil and take it daily. It should be noted though that this remedy is not suitable for use in young children and infants.

Peppermint oil:

Peppermint oil has great natural antibacterial properties, and will also help to unclog sinuses and a sore throat. On top of this, it also acts as an expectorant, which will help to reduce the coughing during attacks. It can also help to reduce a fever.

It should be noted though that it should only be used on adults and older children; not on small children or infants. To use correctly, mix it will coconut oil, and rub either on the back of your neck or on the bottom of your feet.

Cedarwood oil:

This is great at helping to relieve spasmodic conditions of the respiratory system, such as whooping cough. It is really effective at removing phlegm from the respiratory tracts and lungs as well, which will help the symptoms of whooping cough.

Simply run two drops of cedarwood oil onto your chest and throat before you go to bed, in order to loosen the phlegm and help with breathing.

It is really important to note though that this remedy should only be used on adults and older children. Do not use on infants, or small children.

Prevent the infection from spreading:

Whooping cough is contagious, so it is really important that you try and prevent this from spreading; particularly if you have children in your home.

Simple hygiene measures are enough to fix this, such as covering your mouth when you cough, and washing your hands often. It is also advisable for you to where a mask around others, if it is unavoidable and you must see them.

Try and rest as much as you can until you feel well again.
