How to Soothe a Sore Throat at Home

There are many remedies to soothe a sore throat that you can try at home, we have picked out some of the most effective that could help you over the winter period

As the winter nights draw in, and the heating is put on for longer hours, it is only natural that you are more likely to experience a sore throat. Although this can be a sign of a more serious health complaint, or an infection, the chances are, it is simply due to your surroundings, and our natural remedies are a great way to help treat this and soothe the sore throat.

The chances are that even if your sore throat is not serious enough to warrant making an appointment to see your doctor, it is still uncomfortable, and it might even be preventing you from getting the rest that you require. We all know that our body heals itself at night whilst we are asleep, so it is important that you are getting the rest that you need, in order for your body to fight whatever is causing you to have a sore throat.

Fortunately, like we say, there are a number of different things that you can try at home, which are all designed to help soothe the pain and irritation that comes with a sore throat, so that you can get the rest that you need.

Honey:

Honey really is a wonder product, and it has long been used to treat and soothe sore throats. Studies have shown that it is more effective at soothing a night time cough compared to other cough suppressants that you can purchase over the counter.

On top of this, the properties in honey make it really effective at healing wounds, which can shorten the amount of time that you are suffering from a sore throat.

Please note though that you should never give honey to a child under the age of one, as it can make them very ill.

Salt water:

Salt water has great, natural antibacterial properties, which mean that it can help to soothe a sore throat, kill any bacterial, as well as breaking down secretions.

You can easily make a salt water solution at home as well, by mixing half a teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water. Gargle this solution, in order for it to help reduce the swelling and to keep the throat clean.

In order for this to be effective, you should try and do it every three hours.

Chamomile tea:

It is no surprise that chamomile tea features on this list, as it is well known for its soothing properties. As well as being a lovely drink, it has long been used for medicinal purposes, and is really great at helping to soothe a sore throat. It is often used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and astringent properties.

On top of this, studies have suggested that inhaling chamomile steam can actually help to relieve the symptoms of a cold, which as we all know often include a sore throat and drinking the tea can also have the same benefits. It will stimulate the immune system to help to fight any infection that can be causing your sore throat.

Peppermint:

Peppermint oil is often found in different over the counter throat sprays, and it is for good reason. It contains menthol, which is great at helping to thin out any mucus and to calm sore throats and coughs. On top of this, it also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, which can all encourage healing.

Do not apply or use essential oils without mixing them with a carrier oil first. To make an effective throat spray, simply mix five drops of peppermint oil with an ounce of carrier oil.

Gargle with baking soda:

Baking soda mixed with salt water is really effective at helping to relieve a sore throat. Like we have previously mentioned, salt water is effective on its own, but adding baking soda will help to kill any bacteria and to prevent the growth of yeast and fungi.

Make this rinse by combining one cup of warm water, with a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda, and an eighth of a teaspoon of salt, and gargle and swish this around your mouth. Use this every three hours, or as needed.

Fenugreek:

Fenugreek is popular with breast feeding mothers, however, the health benefits go far beyond these, including helping to soothe a sore throat.

Research has shown how healing this can be, and it is also thought to relieve pain, and kill any bacteria that can then cause irritation or inflammation. On top of this it is also an effective anti-fungal treatment.

Marshmallow root:

This supplement contains a mucus like substance that will coat and therefore soothe a sore throat. You should add some dried marshmallow root into one cup of boiling water, before sipping two to three times a day in order to help ease a sore throat.

It should be noted though that people who have been diagnosed with diabetes should talk to a doctor before taking this supplement, as it has been shown to cause a drop-in blood sugar level.

Liquorice root:

This is a very popular treatment for soothing sore throats. Research has suggested that when it is mixed with water, it creates a really effective solution that can then be gargled.

It should be noted though that pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use this as a treatment though.

Cayenne pepper:

The main property in cayenne pepper is capsaicin, which is not only what gives it its heat, but what also acts as a natural pain reliever for blocking pain receptors.

It is suggested that mixing cayenne pepper, warm water and honey, which is then ingested is really effective relief at soothing sore throats, however it should be noted that you might initially feel as though it is burning.

Do not use this remedy though if you have open sores in your mouth, as this is likely to only irritate these further.
