With cold and flu season upon us, it’s likely that you or somebody you know will experience ear ache. Home remedies can be used to help soothe ear ache.

Ear ache is incredibly common, particularly in young children, although it can be painful, it is not usually a sign of anything too serious. There are a number of remedies that can be tried at home in order to soothe ear ache.

Although there are a number of different causes for ear ache, perhaps one of the most common is because of an ear infection, in this instance you should visit a doctor.

Ear ache is very common in babies and young children, however it can often be hard to diagnose, as obviously, young children can’t just tell you they have an ear ache!

Symptoms to look out for include; rubbing or pulling their ears, not reacting to certain sounds, having a temperature of 38 degrees celsius or above, being irritable or restless, being off their food and even loss of balance.

Ear ache is easily treated by yourself at home, however, there are times when you should be making an appointment to see your doctor, this includes; having a very high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery, swelling around the ear, earache in both ears, fluid coming from the ear, when a foreign body is in the ear, ear ache lasting for more than three days, hearing loss, change in hearing, or if ear ache is accompanied by a severe sore throat or vomiting.

Here are just some of the most effective natural treatments that you use to relieve the symptoms of ear ache.

Use a hot or cold compress:

Heat and cold make great pain relievers and are particularly effective for relieving ear ache in both adults and children.

Place the ice pack or warm compress over the ear and keep on for ten minutes. After ten minutes, swap to the other, and alternate between hot and cold. If you find that one is more effective than the other, you can just stick to using one compress.

Olive oil:

Olive oil is perhaps one of the most common ways of treating ear pain, although there is no scientific evidence to back up these claims, it is suggested that putting drops of warm olive oil into your ear is both safe and could help to soothe any ear pain that you are suffering from.

There are a few things that you should bear in mind though with this effort. If you are planning on using olive oil to treat ear pain in a child, discuss this with a medical professional before, and always ensure that they olive oil is no warmer than your body temperature. This can be checked using a thermometer.

Visit a chiropractor:

This might seem like a strange solution to your ear ache, however it is found that visiting a chiropractor can actually do more than helping your back pain, and it can actually help to soothe your ear ache too.

Studies have backed this up as well, and it has been found that those who had chronic ear ache, actually found that they had an improvement in symptoms after just on or two chiropractic sessions.

Tea tree oil:

Tea tree oil is a fantastic thing to keep in your home, as it can be used to treat so many different health complaints. This is because it is a powerful anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

The tea tree oil can be used as ear drops to help reduce the pain and discomfort. Be careful when using tea tree oil as pure oil should not be used topically, instead, it should be combined with a carrier oil, such as olive oil. Speak to a medical professional first before attempting to use tea tree oil to ease ear ache.

Relieve pressure on the ear whilst you sleep:

How you sleep can make a big difference to your ear ache, changing your sleeping position can often be enough to reduce the severity of pain. This is because certain sleep positions will really irritate your ears, particularly if ear ache is caused by an infection. Try and sleep with the affected ear raised up, instead of resting on the pillow.

If you need to use extra pillows to keep your head elevated, do so, as this will also help the ears to drain faster if needed.

Relieve the pressure in the ear canal:

Some simple neck exercises can help to relieve any pressure that you might have in the ear canal, which often causes ear ache.

Learning to complete some simple neck exercises can help to reduce any ear ache that you might be suffering from. Begin by sitting up straight with both feet flat on the ground, and slowly rotate your neck and head to the right, until your head is completely parallel with your shoulder. Repeat on the other side. Raise your shoulders high up, as if you are attempting to cover your ears. These movements should all be carried out slowly, and should be held for a count of five, before relaxing. Repeat these movements as many times as you can throughout the day.

Distraction:

One of the best ways to reduce ear ache is simply by distraction, especially if your child is suffering. Let them watch their favourite film or distract them with their favourite toys. If your child is also teething, this can often cause ear pain, so offer cool items that they can chew down on to relieve some pain.

Of course, this distraction method can work for adults too. Try and keep yourself busy or do what you find relaxing to take the focus away from the pain.
