Bronchitis Cough Home Remedies Natural Solutions

Do You Know How to Treat Bronchitis Naturally?

Bronchitis is a nasty infection of the main airways of the lungs, which then causes them to become irritated and inflamed. Bronchitis normally develops after an infection irritates and inflames the bronchi, which then causes them to produce more mucus than usual, which your body then tries to shift through coughing.

Symptoms of bronchitis will almost certainly include a hacking cough, which might result in you bringing up a clear, yellow grey or even green mucus; however, it is likely that you will also have other symptoms as well, with the main ones including; a sore throat, headache, a runny or blocked nose, aches and pains, and tiredness. The cough can often last for several weeks, and might also require a course of antibiotics as well; however, there are some natural remedies that you can try as well, to help soothe your symptoms.

Of course, if your symptoms or severe, or you are experiencing a shortness of breath, or difficulty in breathing, it is so important that you make an appointment to see your doctor, who can decide on the best course of action for you.

Have some raw honey:

There are some great health benefits to taking raw honey on a daily basis. It is a great source of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, and will also help to stabilise immune function and help to reduce any inflammation. On top of this, honey will help to soothe a sore throat that more often than not accompanies bronchitis, due to a hacking cough that you will be experiencing.

To use honey effectively, simply combine three or four teaspoons of raw honey, and mix with half a teaspoon of cinnamon. This creates a really strong anti-inflammatory effect, that is great for those who are suffering from bronchitis, along with different allergies. Try and consume this between two or three times a day, to see some effect from this.

Drink plenty of water:

Whenever you are suffering from any sort of illness, you should ensure that you are drinking plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. But, it is especially important when you are dealing with bronchitis, as it can help to thin out any mucus, which then makes it easier to bring up. If you have a temperature as well, it is vital that you stay hydrated, particularly if you are sweating as it is very easy to become dehydrated without realising it.

You might find warm liquids slightly more soothing than cold water; however, do stay away from alcohol and caffeinated drinks, which can dehydrate you further. There is no direct evidence that actually suggests that taking on extra fluids will help you to get over bronchitis quicker; however, staying hydrated will boost your overall health, so it is no bad thing.

Make sure you are getting plenty of rest:

One of the best ways to get over an illness is to ensure that you are getting adequate rest. This is because when you sleep your body repairs itself, and will help to maintain a healthy immune system; so naturally, when you are unwell and already suffering from an infection, you need even more rest than you would normally.

In fact, studies have shown that people who are sleep deprived are much more vulnerable to illnesses such as the common cold virus, compared to those who get seven hours of sleep or more every night. Remember that bronchitis often starts with a cold, so if you are unable to fight this off well, it will be harder to fight an infection off.

Use steam inhalation:

Steam can work wonders at loosening and clearing mucus, as well as helping to relieve wheezing, all common symptoms of bronchitis. If you have access to a warm air humidifier or a vapouriser, these are brilliant; however, it is just as easy to create a steam bath at home by leaning over a sink of hot water with a towel over your head, allowing you to breathe in the warm moisture. This can be repeated several times a day and can help to relieve some of the pain that comes along with the infection.

To make this even more effective; you can try adding a drop of essential oil to the water, such as eucalyptus oil, which will help to open up a clogged airway. On top of this, eucalyptus is a fantastic anti-inflammatory and has some pain relieving properties, which will really help to soothe the symptoms of bronchitis.

Gargle with some salt water:

Gargling with some salt water when you are suffering from bronchitis or a similar infection can be very effective at helping to wash away any excess mucus when done several times a day. Although it won’t help to fight any infections or treat the virus; however it can help to relieve your symptoms.

Some research has suggested that gargling with salt water can help to fight off upper respiratory infections, like the common cold, which can then progress into bronchitis.

Stop smoking:

This one cannot be stressed enough. If you are a smoker, and you are suffering from bronchitis, it is so important that you stop. Not only will it make your symptoms worse, but it can also put you at a much greater risk of developing COPD in the future.

Smoking will irritate and aggravate bronchitis and it will take you much longer to recover from the infection. If you are planning on stopping, it is a really great time too, but even if you are not, you should at least refrain from smoking until you are feeling completely better.
